Obviously the more advanced you get as a quilter, the more tools and supplies you will need – but we are here to outline the basics among the many notions, accessories and templates that are available.
This is an obvious one but yet it has to be noted. A functional sewing machine with quilting feet is an important start to your quilting experience. A 1/4″ foot comes with many standard machines and is also available separately making it a very useful for beginner quilters. Other machine feet that have proven effective for quilters are the walking foot, free motion/darning foot or the open-toe machine foot.
Fabric Shears & Seam Ripper
A quality fabric shears are a good addition to your quilters tool box! These prove effective at getting around all of the edges and cutting corners that a paper scissors or rotary cutter can’t reach.
The more accurately your fabric is positioned, the more accurate your patchwork will be. Sewing pins come in different styles and sizes and are effective at holding your fabric together. Why not keep them organized with a simple pincushion!
Fabric, Thread & Quilt Batting
If you enjoy quilting or are interested in taking it up as a new hobby, you are sure to enjoy fabric as they go hand in hand! Every quilter should have a collection of fabric and fat quarters, and gather more as they go! Quilt batting is also an essential for quilters, this also comes in various shapes and sizes.
You have to accept that needles break quite easily and given this is your first sewing project, you may want to have a few spare stowed away! Stock up on some that are compatible with your machine before you take on your first sewing venture.
Rotary Cutter, Ruler & Mat
Cutting the fabric that you are using for your quilt will require more than just your fabric shears. Add a rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat to your collection and you are well on the way to your first quilting experience.
